Last winter, I was wandering through Whyte when I spotted the beautiful lights over at Old Strathcona. There was an event happening there called The Winter Whyte Lights, where families and friends came together to celebrate Winter and the November sky. The entire block beamed with colour as musicians performed under hanging decors inside of the festive atmosphere. It was a very joyful night.
This Saturday November 30th, The Winter Whyte Lights will kick off again from 4-7pm with an even bigger venue, taking up the entire area around McIntyre Park (on the west side of the Old Strathcona Market)—and brighter lights! There will be kid-friendly programs such as Robot Santa’s workshop, kids yoga and movement from Little Lotus Inc, and even a free Santa photo booth. Furthermore, the fire pits will keep your hands warm, and s’mores will be provided for free.
Victorian carollers will roam the neighbourhood from 1-4 pm, and you can buy holiday cocktails at the event along with an 18+ speakeasy in the Arts Barns with drag performances by the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Wild Rose—and a special drag appearance from Mrs Claus.
Treats are available for purchase from Sugared & Spiced in the speakeasy, and the Winter Shop Hop offering treats, deals, and exclusive in-store experiences from nearby restaurants and stores begins on the 28th until November 30th. Transportation is fairly easy by LRT, and there are many buses, although parking might be hectic.
You can definitely have a wonderful time without spending a single dime, but I cannot wait to shop hop with friends and take pictures of the gorgeous decors. Whether you are coming for the Winter Whyte Lights that only happens once a year, or are just wandering by, make sure to bundle up for the cold either way. And more importantly, soak in the festive atmosphere in the streets, and simply enjoy your colourful Whyte evening.
