There’s a Halloween Activity for Everyone This October

There’s no shortage of spooky good times to be had in Edmonton this October. Whether you’re looking to have your socks scared off or to learn about some local lore, you’re guaranteed to find what you’re looking for! I’ve put together a list of ten diverse events that will hopefully include something for everyone. All events will be following city guidelines for COVID-19, check the event website to see if vaccine passports are required.
For Families with Young Kids
October 23, 24, 30, & 31
Edmonton Valley Zoo, 13315 Buena Vista Road, Edmonton
Celebrate Halloween with the animal kingdom this year! Enjoy some family friendly fun by going trick-or-treating at the Zoo. In addition to all your favourite animals, there will be plenty of decorations and treats—so don’t forgot to wear your costumes and bring your treat bags! This event is easy on the scares so it’s one I would definitely take my nieces and nephews to.

For the Brave
September 24 – November 7

Not for the faint of heart! This professional haunted house has two attractions this year that are truly terrifying. WARPED is a spine-tingling indoor attraction that is a continuation of last years area 51 theme. Guests must make their way through the warehouse and learn the storyline of the haunted house which is guided by the actors. Dusk is an outdoor New Orleans themed graveyard that comes alive with all sorts of scary creatures once the sun goes down. Make sure to bring suitable footwear and plenty of courage—there’s no refunds for chickening out! Despite my love for all things horror, you’re not going to catch me there dead, or alive.

For Party Animals

Looking to spend your Halloween drinking and dancing? Then you’re not going to want to miss Beercade’s Haunted Carnival! Get your VIP tickets ahead of time so you can skip the line and guarantee your spot at one of Edmonton’s rowdiest Halloween bashes. Unfortunately, my bar hopping days are far behind me, so you won’t find me in attendance—but with over 100 different arcade games and $10 yardis, Beercade’s Haunted Carnival is sure to be a good time.

For History Buffs
High Level Bridge Haunted Trolley Tours
October 25 to 31 @ 5 PM
High Level Streetcar, 8408 Gateway Blvd NW, Edmonton
Hop on the historic High Level Streetcar and take a one-hour tour of some of Edmonton’s most haunted spots. Learn all about the ghosts that roam Old Strathcona and the terrible tales that lead them there. Stories include the Spanish Flu victims at the U of A Hospital, the ghosts that haunt the Arts Barn, and even ghosts from the construction of the High Level bridge! The company offers several different ghost tours, most of which require walking, but sitting in a heated trolley car sounds much more enjoyable to me.

For Movie Buffs
Halloween Movies @ Metro Cinema
October 23 – 31
Metro Cinema, 8712 109 Street, Edmonton
Enjoy all your Halloween favourites this month at Metro Cinema. From Hocus Pocus to The Bride of Frankenstein to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, there’s a wide variety of films to choose from every weekend in October. So, if relaxing is more your style, grab your friends and some popcorn and celebrate Halloween at the movies. My personal recommendations from the line up are: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and the 2021 remake of Candyman.

For Andrenaline Junkies
October 30 (6 PM – 10 PM)
Galaxyland, 170 Street Northwest, Edmonton
You’re in for a double scare at this ghoulish event. The rides will make you scream—and so will the haunted house! Galaxyland has 11 intermediate rides including a Carousel and the Solar Spinner (similar to a teacup ride), nine intermediate rides including the Flying Galleon boat ride and the Swing of the Century, and seven advanced rides including the Mindbender roller coaster and the Spaceshot. There’s no expenses spared on this annual event, enjoy unlimited rides, plenty of games, loud music, spooky décor, and even a treat bag! There will be no shortage of thrills and chills this Halloween at Fright Night. Though I haven’t been to Galaxyland in many years, you may just catch me there enjoying some nostalgia.

Tarot for Two
Friday, October 22 & 29 (8 PM – 11 PM)
Multicultural Heritage Centre, 51 Street, Stony Plain
Cozy up with your significant other over wine and charcuterie after you experience the Heritage Centre’s famous ghost tour. Learn about the spooky history of the centre as well as ghost hunting and the metaphysical. You’ll also get a personal tarot reading—will there be lasting love or future heartbreak in your cards? While not everyone’s cup of tea, a date night filled with ghost stories and tarot readings is definitely up my alley, and apparently many others feel the same. Originally planned for just the October 22, the event received an overwhelming response, and an additional night was added for October 29.

For Shopaholics
Alt After Dark Halloween Market
Friday October 29 (7 PM – 11 PM)
Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre, 8426 Gateway Blvd NW, Edmonton
Stock up on all things spooky at this Halloween market. Alt After Dark has over 35 vendors, artists, and local brewers, so there’s no doubt you’ll find plenty of things that tickle your fancy. Being a connoisseur of the creepy, I’ve been to my fair share of alternative markets and this one looks top notch. You’ll likely find me there scoping out some new oddities for my home. With free entry, free parking, and door prizes up for grabs, you would have to be absolutely batty to miss this!

For the Competitive
Saturday, October 30 (3:30 PM – 8:00 PM)

Obsessed with Squid Game? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Put your skills to the test this Halloween and play the iconic games from the Netflix series. If you don’t want to play, you can watch in the audience or you can be a game master and bet on the player you think will win! Unfortunately, you won’t get 45.6 billion Won for winning, but you also won’t die if you lose. True to the show, not much can be found about the events organizers, so I’d suggest playing at your own risk.

For the Spiritual
Sunday, October 31 (7:30 PM – 10:00 PM)
